History
Hotel Splendid was built by a well-known Prague architect A. Kroft in the style of cubism. Till 1953 it was a private family hotel belonging to the Schindler family. The picturesque Stromovka park, 1 minute away from the hotel, which once used to be the royal hunting grounds, now offers its visitors an atmosphere of silence and nature, with a lake, mighty oaks and various animals and birds – and all of that in the immediate proximity to the centre of Prague.
Lida Barova – a well-known Czech actress – recollected in her memoirs: “we lived in three different buildings in the Letna area. At first we lived in the building where there is hotel now... from there we had a fine view of the trees in the Stromovka park. Ovenecka street! The kingdom of my childhood”.
In the fifties there used to be tennis courts in the park which enjoyed huge popularity among the Prague elite. That is why tennis rackets are an integral part of the coat of arms of Hotel Splendid. Restaurant Splendid used to be a favourite place of the “jet-set” of that time.
In 1953 the hotel was nationalised. As hotel Splendid was situated very close to the Soviet embassy (now the Embassy of Russia), till 1989 it accommodated diplomats and generals of the former Soviet Union. During the socialist times hotel Splendid was considered one of the best hotels of Prague and served clients of a high level.
Now it is again a family hotel that underwent a complex reconstruction of its restaurant and bathrooms and now offers you fine accommodation in a picturesque area of Prague, as well as dishes of Czech and international cuisine.
